Ingredients
  

Beans
  • 2 cups cooked pinto beans or black beans
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or lard
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth or water
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper adjust to taste

Method
 

Cooking the Beans
  1. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the cooked beans, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, allowing the beans to heat through.
Mashing the Beans
  1. Add the vegetable broth to the skillet and use a potato masher to mash the beans to your desired consistency.
  2. Continue to cook for an additional 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thickened and creamy.
  3. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

Refried beans can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. They can also be frozen for longer storage.
