Ingredients

Rice and Beef
  • 1 cup dry rice for serving
  • 1 lb extra lean ground beef can be replaced with chicken or tofu
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
Vegetables
  • 400 g frozen steamed broccoli can be fresh
Sauce
  • ½ cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey for sweetness
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger grated
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha sauce for heat
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch for thickening
Toppings
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds for topping
  • 2 green onions thinly sliced for garnish

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • Steamer Basket or Microwave
  • whisk

Method

Cooking Steps
  1. Cook rice according to package instructions.
  2. Defrost broccoli using a steamer basket or in the microwave. Once defrosted, chop the broccoli into small florets.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and season with salt and black pepper. Break up the beef using a wooden spatula and cook until no longer pink (about 4 minutes). Drain excess grease.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and sriracha.
  5. In the same pan, reduce heat to low and add the sauce. Once bubbling, whisk in cornstarch while continuing to whisk to prevent clumps.
  6. Add cooked ground beef and defrosted broccoli back into the pan. Stir to combine and cook for about 5 minutes to heat the broccoli.
  7. Serve over rice and top with sesame seeds and green onions if desired.
