Description

  • 1 medium green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 15 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil for sautéing

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Remove the core from the cabbage and blanch leaves in boiling water for about 5 minutes until pliable. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté diced onion until soft (about 5 minutes). Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  3. Add ground meat to the skillet, breaking it up as it cooks until browned (about 7 minutes). Drain excess grease if necessary.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, cooked rice, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer on low for about 10 minutes to meld flavors.
  5. In a baking dish, layer half of the meat mixture on the bottom; top with cooked cabbage leaves and remaining meat mixture. Cover with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 25 minutes.
